How Creating a Peaceful Home Can Serve Your Guests (and Yourself)

In honor of National Relaxation Day and shoutout to Natty Writes for the idea for this blog post!!

There’s a line in my book, Simple Hospitality, that often stays with readers:

“Hospitality is often quiet. It’s a rhythm, not a performance.” (Invitation #5)

It reminds me that hospitality isn’t about impressing—it’s about offering peace. And sometimes the most generous thing we can offer our guests (and ourselves) is rest.

The Gift of Calm

When someone walks into your home, what do they notice first?

Is it the soft light? The gentle music and candle lit? A place to sit and exhale?

We often think of hospitality as energy and effort—meal prep, cleaning, conversation. But hospitality is also stillness. It’s saying, “You don’t have to be ‘on’ here.” It’s offering your presence, your porch swing, your cup of tea—and letting that be enough.

“When we open our doors with love, we make room for someone to feel seen, known, and cherished.” (Invitation #23)

Whether it’s a close friend who stops by after a hard day or a neighbor who just needed to talk, creating a peaceful environment can make someone feel safe enough to breathe a little deeper.

Peace is a Practice—for Them and for You

One of my favorite ideas in Simple Hospitality is this: you don’t have to be peaceful to offer peace. You can light a candle, turn on soft music, pour yourself a glass of iced tea, and choose rest in small ways—even if your day was full.

That, too, is hospitality.

Not just for your guests, but for yourself.

“The world doesn’t need more perfection—it needs more welcome.” (Invitation #57)

A tidy table. A folded blanket. A handwritten note on the counter. These quiet gestures prepare a space, not just for others—but for your own soul to feel at home too.

3 Simple Ways to Create a Restful Environment Today:

1. Light a Candle Before Guests Arrive

It signals: “This is a place where you can relax.” A lovely scent is just plain comforting!

2. Keep a Pair of Slippers or a Cozy Throw Nearby

Little comforts speak louder than words.

3. Set the Tone with Gentle Music

Create a playlist you love—instrumentals, soft hymns, or summer jazz. Let your home sing peace before you even say hello.

The Takeaway

Simple Hospitality isn’t about entertaining. It’s about creating space for others to feel grounded, cared for, and quietly welcomed. And when you do that for others, something beautiful happens: your heart begins to slow, too.

Let your home be a place where rest lives—in the air, in the rhythms, in the atmosphere.

Because when you welcome peace in… it has a way of staying.
