The Art of Letter Writing
There’s something timeless and tender about receiving a handwritten letter in the mail. In a world of instant messages and quick texts, letter writing slows us down. It allows us to linger, to reflect, and to connect on a deeper level—with others and even ourselves.
In Simple Hospitality, I return often to the power of personal connection—and letter writing is one of my favorite, most nostalgic ways to show care. Whether it’s a thank-you note, a word of encouragement, or a birthday card tucked into the mailbox, the simple act of putting pen to paper can brighten someone’s entire week.
Today I’m sharing a few gentle tips to rekindle your love for letter writing:
1. Start Small and Keep It Simple
You don’t need to write pages. A heartfelt paragraph or even a few lines can mean a lot. Begin with one person in mind—a friend, a neighbor, a grandchild—and write just to them.
2. Create a Letter-Writing Ritual
Light a candle. Pour a cup of tea. Turn on quiet music. Gather your favorite notecards (I love Rifle Paper Co. and anything with florals) and keep stamps nearby. Making it a ritual transforms the act into something you’ll look forward to.
3. Use Specific Encouragement
Tell the person why you’re grateful for them. Share a memory you both love. Or offer a blessing for the season ahead. Thoughtfulness always outweighs perfection.
4. Write Letters That Don’t Expect a Reply
Hospitality is about offering, not obligating. Your letter can be a gift with no strings attached. It's okay if it doesn’t get a response. You’ve still sent goodness into the world.
5. Involve Your Family
Let your kids decorate envelopes or sign their names. Include a photo or a drawing. My grandchildren love receiving fun mail—and even more so when they get to help send it!
Looking for inspiration? In Invitation #7: Traveling Kindness, I talk about tucking small surprises or notes into your bag while on the go. A postcard from your trip, a note slipped under a neighbor’s door—these are tiny invitations that ripple kindness wherever they land.
So today, pull out that card you’ve been meaning to send. Say what’s on your heart. And remember: your words have the power to carry light, comfort, and connection.
